Jaipur, June 15: Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of engaging in religious politics and promoting communal polarization. Speaking at the ‘Nawab Dada Kaim Khan Shaheed Day and Honor Ceremony’ in Jaipur, he stated that the BJP’s political strategy is based on inciting people in the name of Hindutva to gain power.
During the event organized by the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Welfare Society in Rajasthan, Gehlot remarked that if a strong leader like former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi were in power today, she would impose a ban on parties like the BJP that indulge in such politics. He alleged that the BJP is attempting to exploit religious sentiments for political gain.
Gehlot emphasized that the BJP aims to present itself as a Hindutva party, which is why it does not provide adequate representation to the Muslim community in elections. He pointed out that in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, which has 403 seats, the BJP has not nominated a single Muslim candidate, despite the possibility of symbolic representation.
He also mentioned senior Muslim leaders within the BJP, such as Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Shah Nawaz Hussain, who have been sidelined from active politics. Gehlot questioned this as part of the BJP’s political mindset.
He asserted that elected representatives who take an oath to uphold the Constitution must respect all religions and communities. The Constitution grants equal rights to every citizen and does not permit politics based on religion. Gehlot called for all political parties to adhere to constitutional values to maintain the spirit of democracy and the Constitution.
During the event, he highlighted the importance of social harmony, secularism, and the protection of the Constitution as essential for the unity and integrity of the nation. His statements are likely to spark new debates in the state’s political landscape.
