Jaipur, April 19: On the occasion of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary, a heated debate has erupted in Rajasthan regarding constitutional rights. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot spoke to the media on Tuesday, making serious allegations against the state’s BJP government. He described the delay in local body and panchayat elections as a “murder of democracy,” questioning the government’s intentions.
Gehlot escalated the issue by calling for intervention from the country’s constitutional authorities. He stated that when the state government ignores clear directives from the courts, it becomes the duty of the President and the Governor to step in and protect the fundamental units of democracy—panchayats and municipal bodies. This demand for intervention from a former Chief Minister is considered unusual in Rajasthan’s political landscape.
He expressed deep concern over the ongoing delays in the elections for panchayats, municipal bodies, and cooperative institutions. Gehlot alleged that despite clear instructions and deadlines set by the Supreme Court and the Rajasthan High Court, the government is evading the conduct of elections. He pointed out that cooperative elections have not been held for several years, and local self-governance institutions are now being undermined.
Critically addressing the government, Gehlot termed the situation a “constitutional breakdown.” He asserted that when the government is not accountable to constitutional institutions, it has no moral right to remain in power. He further accused the current government of engaging in symbolic politics, using events like Ambedkar Jayanti to create an illusion while neglecting the core values of the Constitution.
Gehlot remarked that those currently in power do not genuinely believe in Ambedkar’s principles. He sarcastically noted that if the government truly believed in the Constitution, there would be elected representatives in panchayats and municipalities instead of administrative control. He also expressed concern about the state of the judiciary and central agencies in the country, stating that these institutions appear to be operating under pressure rather than independently, thereby weakening the roots of democracy.
