New Delhi, February 19 Gyanesh Kumar officially took charge as India’s 26th Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on Wednesday morning. His appointment follows the retirement of Rajiv Kumar, who stepped down from the position on February 18. Gyanesh Kumar was appointed as the new CEC on Monday, making him the first Chief Election Commissioner to be appointed under the new law governing Election Commission appointments. His tenure will extend until January 26, 2029.
First Address: Emphasizing the Importance of Voting
After assuming office, CEC Gyanesh Kumar underscored the significance of voting in a democracy. He stated:
“The first step in serving the nation is voting. Every citizen of India who has completed 18 years of age must exercise their right to vote.”
His remarks highlight the Election Commission’s commitment to strengthening voter participation and ensuring a free and fair electoral process across the country.
An Experienced Bureaucrat at the Helm
A 1988-batch IAS officer, Gyanesh Kumar has extensive experience in administration and governance. His appointment as CEC comes at a crucial time when India is preparing for major elections across multiple states and union territories in the coming years.
Elections Under His Tenure
During Gyanesh Kumar’s four-year term, 20 states and one union territory (Puducherry) will hold elections. His tenure will begin with the Bihar Assembly elections and conclude with the Mizoram Assembly elections.
