High-Level Meeting on Panchna Dam Water Dispute Ends Without Resolution

Jaipur, June 30: A high-level meeting aimed at resolving the nearly 20-year-old Panchna Dam water dispute took place in Jaipur on Tuesday. Despite multiple rounds of discussions between three government ministers and farmer representatives from both sides, no consensus was reached. The meeting concluded without a resolution.

Around 8 PM, farmer representatives from the command area left the meeting abruptly. Following this, Agriculture Minister Dr. Kirori Lal Meena also exited in frustration. Present at the meeting were Agriculture Minister Dr. Kirori Lal Meena, Water Resources Minister Suresh Singh Rawat, and Minister of State for Home Jawahar Singh Bedham.

The three ministers engaged in discussions with representatives from both sides to address the long-standing issues surrounding the Panchna Dam. Farmers from nearby villages and the command area presented their demands and objections during the meeting.

The government aimed to establish an agreement that would allow water to flow from the Panchna Dam into the canals. However, disagreements on several points hindered this objective.

Water Resources Minister Suresh Rawat acknowledged that the dispute is two decades old and will require time to resolve. He stated that a single round of talks is insufficient for such a longstanding issue. Both sides expressed their views during the meeting, and the government is committed to finding a solution soon.

Minister Rawat noted that while there was agreement on several issues, some points remain unresolved. One side proposed reconvening in seven days to continue discussions.

In response to Dr. Meena’s abrupt exit, Minister Rawat clarified that it would be inaccurate to label this as a dispute. He emphasized that when two parties engage in dialogue, it is essential for everyone to voice their perspectives. He added that Dr. Meena, as a senior minister, naturally represents the interests of his community. There was no serious conflict during the meeting; rather, different parties shared their opinions.

Minister Rawat reported that discussions covered around 8 to 10 points, with positive dialogue on many, but consensus was lacking on one or two issues, including water testing. He assured that there is no contention regarding scheduling another meeting either a week before or after. The government will maintain communication with both sides and strive for a resolution soon.

The Panchna Dam water dispute has been a sensitive issue concerning water allocation between villages in the Karauli and Sawai Madhopur regions. While villagers near the dam advocate for their water rights, farmers in the command area demand water flow into the canals for irrigation.

Farmers in the command area have expressed concerns about not receiving irrigation water for an extended period, which has adversely affected their crops. Conversely, villagers near the dam fear that releasing water could exacerbate water scarcity in their regions.

With no agreement reached in the high-level meeting, all eyes are now on the government’s next steps. Minister Rawat has indicated that further discussions will take place soon. The government aims to find a solution that considers the interests of both parties, ensuring relief for farmers while addressing the dispute.

Currently, there is ongoing administrative and political activity regarding the Panchna Dam water dispute. The upcoming meetings could prove crucial in steering towards a resolution.
