New Delhi, March 3: Team India has secured its spot in the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2026. Under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian team is set to face England on March 5 for the sixth time in a T20 World Cup semifinal. However, despite the tournament being held on home soil, the journey to the Super 8 has been fraught with challenges. The Indian team’s performance has not reflected the champion spirit expected of them.
The biggest issue for Team India has been their batting. In their opening match against the USA, the batting order was exposed, with the team losing six key wickets for just 77 runs. Thanks to a stellar 84-run innings from captain Suryakumar Yadav, the team managed to reach a respectable score.
Against Namibia, Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya managed to score runs, but the rest of the batting lineup underperformed. Even against Namibia’s weaker bowling attack, players like Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma struggled. Yadav scored just 12 runs off 13 balls, while Varma could only muster 25 runs from 21 balls.
In the match against Pakistan, only Ishan Kishan found his rhythm, scoring a powerful 77 runs off 40 balls. Apart from him, Suryakumar Yadav was the only other player to cross the 30-run mark, making 32 runs from 29 balls. The story was similar against the Netherlands, where Shivam Dube scored 66 runs off 31 balls.
Despite facing smaller teams in the group stage, players like Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, and even captain Suryakumar Yadav struggled to score runs. There were hopes that the Indian batsmen would make a strong comeback in the Super 8 round, showcasing the powerful performances they are known for.
However, the situation worsened in the Super 8. Against South Africa, India’s formidable batting lineup could only manage 111 runs. Fortunately, the batting order found its rhythm against Zimbabwe, achieving their highest score of the tournament.
Sanju Samson‘s explosive 97-run innings against the West Indies led the team to victory, but the rest of the batting lineup continued to falter.
Abhishek Sharma was expected to be a key player for India, but he has struggled significantly, scoring only 80 runs in six matches, failing to open his account in three of them. Known for his aggressive batting, Suryakumar Yadav has also struggled to accumulate runs, maintaining a strike rate of just 135 in this World Cup. Hardik Pandya has been unable to deliver runs in crucial moments.
Overall, Ishan Kishan has been the only Indian batsman to show consistency throughout the tournament. The primary issue with India’s batting lineup has been their inability to work together to score runs. This weakness could be detrimental in the high-pressure semifinal against England on March 5.
