Mumbai, March 24: Hindustan Zinc Limited, one of the world’s largest integrated zinc producers and a top silver manufacturer, has reinforced its long-standing partnership with Tata Steel. This collaboration aims to enhance the integration of low-carbon zinc solutions, known as Ecozen, into sustainable steel manufacturing.
This partnership reflects both companies’ commitment to incorporating climate considerations into their core industrial processes and procurement strategies. Ecozen, Asia’s first low-carbon zinc, is produced using renewable energy. Its verified carbon footprint is less than one ton of carbon emissions per ton of zinc, which is approximately 75% lower than the global industry average. By significantly reducing emissions at the raw material stage, Ecozen enables downstream industries to meaningfully lower their value chain emissions and advance their decarbonization goals.
Arun Mishra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, stated that Ecozen represents a sustainable solution approach that supports the evolving needs of global manufacturing. Our partnership with Tata Steel marks a significant milestone in scaling the adoption of low-carbon zinc and strengthening green supply chains within India’s industrial ecosystem.
Zinc plays a crucial role in galvanizing steel to prevent rust and extend its service life. This is why it is essential in sectors such as infrastructure, automotive, renewable energy, electronics, and energy storage. Since zinc coatings contribute to the inherent carbon footprint of galvanized steel, utilizing low-carbon zinc can yield measurable benefits downstream. Adopting Ecozen can help prevent approximately 400 kilograms of carbon emissions per ton of galvanized steel compared to traditional zinc. This provides customers with a pathway to reduce Scope 3 emissions while enhancing their overall sustainability performance.
Ranjan Sinha, Chief Procurement Officer at Tata Steel, congratulated the delivery of Ecozen at the Tata Steel Sahibabad plant. He emphasized that this collaboration with Hindustan Zinc highlights our shared commitment to advancing sustainable practices and green technologies within our supplier ecosystem.
Hindustan Zinc has been a trusted strategic partner of Tata Steel for over two decades. This extended engagement under the Ecozen initiative signifies a significant development in the partnership, integrating decades of operational excellence with a focus on decarbonization, sustainable practices, and responsible sourcing. This positions both companies at the forefront of a more robust steel value chain.
Through this collaboration, Hindustan Zinc and Tata Steel aim to support comprehensive sustainability and climate commitments, ranging from reducing Scope 3 emissions to establishing climate-friendly procurement frameworks. They also seek to advance India’s transition to low-carbon, resilient industrial development. This partnership underscores how strategic metal innovation and long-term collaboration can create substantial climate impacts within the steel and metal ecosystem.
