New Delhi, April 18 The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued an official clarification denying recent media reports claiming that a satellite-based toll collection system will be launched across India from May 1, 2025. According to the ministry, no such decision has been taken either by the ministry or the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

This statement comes in response to speculative reports that suggested the satellite tolling system would replace the existing FASTag-based toll collection infrastructure nationwide starting next month.
Pilot Implementation of Barrier-Less Toll System Using ANPR-Fastag
The ministry clarified that it is currently evaluating a barrier-less toll collection system using a combination of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and FASTag RFID technology. This advanced tolling system is being deployed on a pilot basis at selected toll plazas to facilitate seamless vehicle movement and reduce commute time.
-
ANPR Cameras will read vehicle number plates to identify them automatically.
-
FASTag RFID readers will be used for automatic toll deductions without vehicle stoppage.
-
Violation monitoring will be enforced through e-notices, and non-compliance could lead to FASTag suspension or other penalties.
Evaluation Before Nationwide Rollout
The NHAI has invited bids for implementing the ANPR-FASTag based toll system on select highways. A nationwide rollout will only be considered based on:
-
System performance
-
Operational efficiency
-
User feedback
Until then, the existing FASTag system remains in full effect, and no new satellite toll system will be launched from May 1.
This clarification ensures that commuters relying on the current toll payment infrastructure can continue to use it without disruption while the government explores more efficient alternatives for the future.
