Jaipur, July 10: The Rajasthan government has accelerated the process of implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). A two-day public hearing commenced on Friday at the Jaipur Collectorate auditorium. The aim is to make the proposed law practical, inclusive, and aligned with public sentiments.
During this hearing, suggestions are being gathered from the general public, various religious organizations, social institutions, elected representatives, and enlightened citizens. A committee led by retired IAS officer Shatrughan Singh has been formed by the state government to study these suggestions and draft the UCC, which will then be submitted to the government.
Religious leaders from different faiths expressed their views during the hearing. Muslim leaders emphasized the need to respect Muslim personal laws and avoid any alterations to religious customs and beliefs. In contrast, Hindu leaders supported the implementation of a uniform law for all citizens.
Demand for Strict Provisions on Live-in Relationships
During the meeting, nearly all religious leaders voiced concerns regarding live-in relationships. They argued that such relationships could pose a serious challenge to social order. They called for clear and strong legal provisions to protect the future of women and children in case of disputes arising from live-in arrangements.
The religious leaders and social representatives also suggested mandatory registration of live-in relationships, defining the rights and responsibilities of the involved parties, and ensuring the safety of women and children.
Online Suggestions Also Accepted
Committee chairman Shatrughan Singh noted that various groups are providing suggestions through the two-day public hearing. Additionally, the general public can submit their suggestions online. The committee will analyze the received suggestions and prepare a comprehensive report to be submitted to the state government.
Based on this report and the suggestions, the state government will advance the process of finalizing the proposed draft of the Uniform Civil Code. This public hearing is considered a significant step in understanding public opinion, social perspectives, and legal feasibility regarding the UCC in Rajasthan.
