New Delhi, September 8: Political activity has intensified from Delhi to Punjab following the appointment of Sachin Pilot as the new in-charge of the Punjab Congress. Just days after taking on this role, Pilot visited 10 Janpath in Delhi to meet with Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
During the meeting, Rahul and Priyanka extended their best wishes to Pilot for his new responsibilities. They discussed the upcoming 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, party events, and electoral strategies. According to sources, the Congress leadership is focused on strengthening the organization before the elections and uniting various factions within the party.
After the meeting, Sachin Pilot expressed his gratitude to Rahul and Priyanka on social media for entrusting him with the responsibilities in Punjab. He assured that with collective efforts, a strong organization, and the strength of the workers, Congress would fight the elections vigorously to regain power in Punjab.
Pilot Faces Major Political Task in Punjab
For Sachin Pilot, the responsibility in Punjab is not just an organizational appointment; it marks a significant milestone in his political career. Having previously served as the state Congress president and Deputy Chief Minister in Rajasthan, he now takes charge of a state where Congress has a solid political base but has been struggling with internal conflicts for a long time.
On September 5, Congress made organizational changes, appointing Sachin Pilot as the General Secretary in charge of Punjab, replacing Bhupesh Baghel, who has been assigned to Assam. This reshuffle comes ahead of the Assembly elections scheduled for next year.
Uniting Factions Will Be the Biggest Challenge
With the Aam Aadmi Party currently in power in Punjab, Congress is attempting to return as the main opposition party. However, Pilot’s most significant challenge will be to bring together various leaders and factions within his own organization before the electoral battle.
In Punjab Congress, state president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, among other senior leaders, have their own political influence. Recently, differences within the party have become increasingly apparent. Pilot’s appointment is seen as an effort to control this internal strife and build a united organization ahead of the elections.
Pilot’s experience in Rajasthan, where he has led the organization for an extended period, is considered beneficial. As state president, he maintained consistent engagement with party workers. Now, he faces the challenge of implementing a similar model tailored to local conditions in Punjab.
Initiating Dialogue with Leaders
Following his new appointment, Pilot has begun reaching out to Punjab Congress leaders and holding meetings. Punjab Congress president Raja Warring has already met with him in Delhi. They discussed preparations for the Assembly elections, organizational issues, and electoral strategies. There are also indications that Pilot may visit Punjab soon.
Success Could Elevate His National Political Standing
Sachin Pilot’s role in Punjab is viewed as a significant test of the Congress leadership’s confidence in him. Punjab is one of the states where Congress remains a key contender for power. If Pilot can manage to curb factionalism, unify the organization, and improve electoral performance, his role in national politics could become even more crucial.
Political analysts see this responsibility as a major opportunity for Pilot. Success in Punjab could propel him beyond Rajasthan, granting him a more significant role in Congress’s national leadership and electoral strategy.
Currently, Pilot’s first test is to unite Punjab Congress leaders on a single platform before the election campaign. The performance of Congress in the 2027 elections will largely depend on how quickly Pilot can transform the internal strife into electoral strength after assuming his new responsibilities.
