Cyclonic Circulation Triggers Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Across Several Districts

KOLKATA — April 14, 2025 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and rain across several districts of West Bengal starting Monday through April 18. The alert comes as moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal combine with favorable atmospheric conditions to trigger unstable weather.
Cyclonic Circulation Fuels Weather Disturbance
According to IMD, a cyclonic circulation has developed in the upper atmosphere over Bangladesh and adjoining regions, which is expected to impact large parts of South Bengal. Districts such as Purulia, Birbhum, Murshidabad, East and West Bardhaman, and Nadia are likely to witness moderate rainfall, lightning, and strong winds at isolated locations.
The department has cautioned that wind speeds may intensify in these areas, increasing the risk of localized disruptions.
North Bengal to Witness Stormy Spells
In North Bengal, sporadic thunder and rainfall activity is expected to persist until April 17. While the intensity may be lower compared to South Bengal, IMD has warned that sudden gusts of wind and lightning strikes could still pose a hazard.
Residents are advised to take precautionary measures, avoid open spaces during thunderstorms, and stay tuned to local weather updates.
Advisory Issued for Public Safety
The IMD has urged people across West Bengal to remain alert and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities. Farmers, especially in vulnerable districts, are also advised to secure their crops and farm equipment in anticipation of adverse weather conditions.
