Chandigarh, July 9: Tensions within the Punjab Congress are escalating as organizational conflicts and factionalism come to the forefront. Former Chief Minister and Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi is displaying rebellious tendencies, while the Congress high command appears to be distancing itself from him. Reports indicate that Channi sought to meet Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi in Delhi, but was unable to secure an appointment.
The primary reason for this situation is believed to be Channi’s faction’s boycott of meetings with Bhupesh Baghel, the Congress high command’s envoy and Punjab in-charge. Baghel has made it clear that the high command’s decisions regarding Punjab Congress will remain unchanged. He emphasized that decisions within the organization are made through a structured process, and all leaders must accept the high command’s directives.
Baghel criticized Channi’s faction, stating that this is not a “game of dolls.” He indicated that Channi and his supporters must comply with the party leadership’s decisions. This has clarified that the high command currently maintains its trust in the existing state president, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.
Channi’s faction claims to have the support of seven MLAs and one MP. In contrast, Baghel showcased the organizational strength by stating that the presidents of 23 districts in Punjab back the current state president, Raja Warring. Baghel argues that the actual functioning of the organization in the electoral arena operates through district presidents and local units.
He also mentioned that decisions regarding which MLA or former MLA will receive tickets in the upcoming elections are yet to be made. However, he stressed that the district organization is crucial for grassroots work, which is why the high command is showing confidence in Warring’s leadership.
Political analysts believe that the next two days could be critical for Punjab Congress. If Channi and his supporters show signs of disunity, the likelihood of the high command giving Channi special consideration may diminish. Conversely, if Channi’s faction remains united, the Congress leadership might open dialogue with them, considering the potential impact on the Dalit vote bank.
The ongoing struggle for leadership within the Congress ahead of the elections poses a significant challenge for the party. While the high command aims to maintain organizational discipline, Channi’s faction is exerting pressure regarding its political stake and leadership role.
All eyes are now on whether the Congress high command will initiate any new efforts to engage Channi’s faction or continue to uphold a firm stance in favor of the current state leadership.
