Jaipur, April 14: On the occasion of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary, a heated debate has erupted in Rajasthan regarding constitutional rights. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot addressed the media on Tuesday, leveling serious allegations against the state’s BJP government. He described the delays in local body and panchayat elections as a “murder of democracy,” questioning the government’s intentions.
Gehlot escalated the issue by calling for intervention from constitutional authorities at the national level. He stated that when the state government disregards clear directives from the courts, it becomes the duty of the President and the Governor to intervene and protect the fundamental units of democracy—panchayats and municipal bodies. This is considered an unusual situation in Rajasthan politics, as it is rare for a former Chief Minister to demand such high-level intervention.
Expressing deep concern over the delays in elections for panchayats, municipal bodies, and cooperative institutions, Gehlot alleged that despite explicit instructions and deadlines set by the Supreme Court and the Rajasthan High Court, the government is evading the electoral process. He pointed out that elections for cooperative institutions have not been held for several years, and now, local self-governance institutions are also being undermined.
Critically condemning the government, Gehlot termed the situation a “constitutional breakdown.” He argued that when the government is not accountable to constitutional institutions, it has no moral right to remain in power. He also accused the current government of engaging in symbolic politics, using events like Ambedkar Jayanti to create a façade while neglecting the core values of the Constitution in practice.
Gehlot remarked that those currently in power do not genuinely believe in Ambedkar’s principles. He sarcastically noted that if the government truly respected the Constitution, there would be elected representatives in panchayats and municipalities instead of administrative control. Additionally, he expressed concerns about the state of the judiciary and central agencies in the country, suggesting that these institutions appear to be under pressure rather than operating independently, thereby weakening the roots of democracy.
Overall, this statement made on Ambedkar Jayanti is igniting a new debate in Rajasthan’s politics, raising questions about the Constitution, democratic institutions, and the electoral process.
