Sachin Pilot Criticizes BJP for Delaying Local Elections in Rajasthan

Jaipur, August 1: Former Deputy Chief Minister and Congress General Secretary Sachin Pilot has raised concerns regarding the delay in local body, panchayat, and student union elections in Rajasthan. During a media interaction in Jaipur on Saturday, he accused the BJP government of avoiding timely elections due to public dissatisfaction and fears of electoral defeat.

Pilot also criticized the central government over the NEET exam controversy, the future of youth, and the functioning of constitutional institutions. He stated that the Congress party will prioritize issues such as law and order, unemployment, inflation, and corruption in the upcoming assembly session.

‘One Nation, One Election’ vs. Delayed Local Elections
Pilot pointed out the contradiction in the central and state governments advocating for ‘One Nation, One Election’ while simultaneously delaying constitutionally mandated local body and panchayat elections. He claimed that the BJP government is anxious about the ground realities, as the public is dissatisfied and desires change. This, he argued, is why the elections for panchayats, local bodies, and student unions are being postponed.

The Rajasthan High Court had directed the state government and the State Election Commission on May 22, 2026, to complete the election process by July 31. The court deemed unnecessary delays in elections contrary to constitutional obligations.

Reference to High Court Directives
Pilot noted that despite the High Court’s strict comments and directives, the government has continued to seek more time under various pretexts instead of conducting the elections. This has harmed democratic institutions and local representation. Previously, Pilot had accused the state government of postponing panchayat and local body elections out of fear of potential defeat.

‘Resignation Alone Won’t Deliver Justice to Youth’
Regarding the NEET exam controversy, Pilot described the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan as a result of student protests and public pressure. The President accepted Pradhan’s resignation from the Union Cabinet on July 25, following the Prime Minister’s advice. Subsequently, Prahlad Joshi was given additional charge of the Ministry of Education.

Pilot emphasized that merely resigning a minister or enacting stringent laws will not resolve the issues within the examination system. To restore the credibility of recruitment and entrance exams, institutional and structural actions against examination mafias, cheating rings, and alleged coaching mafias are necessary. He asserted that it is the government’s responsibility to provide timely justice, transparent investigations, and secure examination conditions for students affected by paper leaks.

‘Misuse of Constitutional Institutions’
The Congress leader accused the central government of politically exploiting constitutional and autonomous institutions. He stressed the importance of maintaining the impartiality and independence of institutions in a democracy. Pilot claimed that there is selective use of institutions against opposition leaders, while similar urgency is not shown in cases involving the government. The BJP and central government have previously dismissed such accusations.

Congress to Challenge Government in Assembly
Regarding the upcoming assembly session, Pilot stated that the opposition will enter the house well-prepared. He claimed that with half of the government’s term nearing completion, many promises made during the elections have yet to materialize. He asserted that Congress will demand answers from the government on issues related to law and order, unemployment, inflation, corruption, farmers’ problems, and youth-related matters. The opposition’s duty is not only to protest but also to effectively raise public issues in the assembly.
