Mahi Dam Set to Become Eco-Tourism Hub with Master Plan for Hundred Islands Development

Udaipur, March 24: The Mahi Dam, which plays a crucial role in irrigation and electricity generation in the Wagad region, is set to establish new dimensions in tourism. The dam’s reservoir area, home to the unique natural heritage of the ‘Hundred Islands,’ will undergo planned tourism development. Under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, the state government has taken significant steps to give the area a tourism identity.

An administrative reform department has formed a high-level committee tasked with creating a comprehensive master plan for tourism development around the dam area. This initiative aims to promote controlled and environmentally friendly tourism activities, contributing to water conservation and generating new employment opportunities locally.

High-Level Committee Led by Udaipur Division Commissioner
The committee established by the state government will be chaired by the Udaipur Division Commissioner. Members include the Banswara District Collector, Chief Engineer of Water Resources Banswara, Conservator of Forests Banswara, Executive Engineer of Public Health Engineering Banswara, Regional Officer of the State Pollution Control Board Banswara, Assistant Town Planner Banswara, and Assistant Director of the Tourism Department. The Executive Engineer of the Mahi Project will serve as the committee’s secretary, with the Water Resources Department overseeing the committee’s administration.

The committee will determine land use, demarcation, leasing/allocation, and regulations for water sports and tourism activities in the Mahi Dam’s reservoir area, islands, and surrounding state and private lands. It will also ensure that no pollution occurs and that environmental standards are strictly adhered to, focusing on the sustainable use of water resources.

Focus on Water Activities and Eco-Tourism
The area, surrounded by greenery and hills, has already begun attracting tourists due to the islands spread across Mahi backwater. Recognized as the ‘City of Hundred Islands,’ this region is poised to develop water activities, nature-based tourism, viewpoints, and other attractions. With the state government’s planned efforts, this area is set to emerge as a leading eco-tourism destination not only in Rajasthan but across the country.

State Government’s Visionary Initiative
Water Resources Minister Suresh Singh Rawat stated, “The development of Mahi Dam will be balanced, environmentally friendly, and revenue-enhancing. In the future, a model will be developed that fulfills regional development, tourism, and water conservation objectives. This initiative will not only give the Mahi area a new identity but also serve as a milestone in the overall development of the region.”
